Group Member Roles 🥷

In Keet, each group chat is an independent space with peers, admins, and moderators who define the rules.

What are the group member roles in Keet?

In Keet, each group chat is an independent space with peers and admins and moderators who define the rules.

The group creator is automatically assigned the role of Administrator 👑

Admins and Moderators can restrict a user's access to their group, but this doesn't affect the other users' ability to start their own chats or join others.

How to change the roles of group members?

You get a role when you join a group, based on the invite you used. An Admin or Moderator can change it later from the group's info. You don't need a new invite, and the member doesn't need to leave and rejoin.

Open the group's info, scroll to the list of members, and select a member. Their 'Permissions' page shows their current role (marked 'Current') and the roles you can give them under 'Assign role':

Click the group name at the top of the chat to open 'Group info', then select a member from the members list:

Select a member from the members list in Group info.

On the 'Permissions' page, select a role to see what it allows. The button at the bottom of the card ('Make Peer', 'Make Moderator' or 'Make Admin') applies the change:

On the Permissions page, expand a role and select its Make button to change the member's role.

Open the group, tap its name to open 'Group info', and tap a member in the members list. On the 'Permissions' screen, tap a role to see what it allows, then tap the button at the bottom of its card ('Make Peer', 'Make Moderator' or 'Make Admin'):

On the Permissions screen, expand a role and tap its Make button to change the member's role.

Only Admins and Moderators see 'Assign role'. Moderators can make a Peer a Moderator and downgrade a Moderator to Peer. Only Admins can make someone an Admin or change an Admin's role.

Upgrade Peer to Moderator

  • Open the member's 'Permissions' page.
  • Expand 'Moderator' and select 'Make Moderator'. The change applies right away.

Downgrade Moderator to Peer

  • Open the member's 'Permissions' page.
  • Expand 'Peer', select 'Make Peer', and confirm with 'Downgrade'. It removes the moderator's capabilities from the member.
  • Moderators can also downgrade themselves in the same way if they decide not to moderate the group anymore.

Downgrade Admin to Peer or Moderator

  • Open the Admin's 'Permissions' page.
  • Expand 'Peer' or 'Moderator' and select 'Make Peer' or 'Make Moderator'. Keet may ask you to confirm with 'Downgrade'.
  • A group always needs an Admin. If you're the only Admin, Keet shows 'You are the only admin in the group. To change your role, assign another admin first.'
  • Administrators can also downgrade themselves in the same way if they decide not to be an admin and not to moderate the group anymore.

Keet asks you to confirm before it downgrades a member to Peer.

Upgrade a member to an Admin

An Admin can promote any existing member to Admin from their 'Permissions' page. The member doesn't need a new invite, and they don't need to leave and rejoin the group.

  1. Open the member's 'Permissions' page.
  2. Expand 'Admin'. The card lists what Admins can do and reminds you that Admins must be frequently online.
  3. Select 'Make Admin'.

The change applies right away, and Keet doesn't ask you to confirm it. Make sure it's the right person before you select the button.

Expand Admin on a member's Permissions page and select Make Admin.

Expand Admin on a member's Permissions screen and tap Make Admin.

The member's role updates immediately, and you see a notification that they're now an Admin. The new Admin gets a notification too, with a button to read about their new responsibilities:

The new Admin sees "You were upgraded to Admin" with a View responsibilities button.

View responsibilities explains what an Admin can do.

The new Admin sees "You were upgraded to Admin" with a View capabilities button.

View capabilities explains what an Admin can do.

Invite someone to a group as an Admin

If the person isn't in the group yet, you can still invite them directly as an Admin:

  • As an Administrator, open the group's info and select 'Share invite link'.
  • Set the invite type to 'Admin'; review and if agreeable accept the Admin rules; then select 'Generate new link'.
  • Share the invite link with the user or let them scan the generated QR code to join as an Administrator.

The Admin invite type asks you to accept the Admin rules before you generate the link.

Keep in mind that an Admin invite link is single-use and expires after the set duration
